When a major
renovation project to improve the street lighting in the fashionable
Hampstead Village area of London was planned, residents specifically
requested "white light."
About 200 19th
century lampposts and old style copper lanterns, equipped with high
pressure sodium and mercury vapor lamps, were replaced with Venture’s
150 watt metal halide lamps.
Drivers traveling
at night now see better because of metal halide lighting which produces
white light to which the human eye is especially sensitive. Good
nighttime vision is important because that’s when most accidents
occur. In fact, at least 6 times as much yellow high pressure sodium
light is needed to produce the same effect on driver reaction times
as white metal halide light.
After sunset,
the human eye is particularly sensitive to light produced by MH
lamps. People can differentiate fine contrasts better and quicker
with MH lighting than they can with HPS.
