Refurbishment
of street lighting columns in some of Londons most famous
landmarks has included the replacement of 700W mercury vapor lamps
with 350W metal halide lamps from Venture Lighting. The end result
is a brighter appearance with illuminance levels the same as before,
while saving 50% on energy costs.
Work on the
street lighting in St James, the Mall and Admiralty Arch was carried
out by NLA (Services) Ltd and involved replacement of control gear
and ignitors as well as lamps. "Upgrading to metal halide provided
the client with a much better lighting installation with minimal
capital outlay and significant energy savings," remarked NLAs
John Coletrini. "We had always had very good service from Venture
in the past so I recommended them for this project," he added.
"One of
the challenges we faced was that there was no space for the ignitors
in the luminaires so they had to be housed in the base of the column
some 9 metres away," Mr Coletrini continued. "Most lamps
require the ignitor to be no more than 1 metre away, but the Venture
lamps are able to accommodate this longer distance," he added.
In all, around
80 columns have been upgraded in this way and the work was timed
to coincide with refurbishment of the columns. The work in St James
and the Mall was carried out for the Royal Parks, while Admiralty
Arch comes under the auspices of the Cabinet Office.
