Tower Automotive
in Granite City, Illinois, has been an industry leader in production
of upper and lower body structures, chassis and suspension stampings,
assemblies and modules.
When considering
a retrofit, the company realized that the existing high pressure
sodium (HPS) systems did not produce the quality of light it wanted.
Staber Dearth, Tower Automotives Facilities Engineer, set
out several important criteria: same footcandles and amount of energy
consumed as the HPS system, a light source that better resembled
natural sunlight and a fast restrike time.
The solution
is Venture's Uni-Form® pulse start metal halide lamps and high
performance ballasts. "Compared to the HPS lighting, the 450
watt Uni-Form pulse start lamps and Opti-Wave™ ballasts give
us nearly the same light levels, lumens and power consumption,"
Dearth said.
At one point,
half the facility was lit with HPS and the other with metal halide.
The open-rated 250 watt lamps offered 22,000 initial lumens and
88 lumens per watt while the 450 watt coated lamps gave 100 lumens
per watt and 45,000 lumens - nearly the equivalent of a 400 watt
HPS lamp - making a dramatic difference.
