On most nights,
the Wrigley Building - overlooking the Chicago River - is basked
in white light. But, for six weeks during the winter, it participates
in the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association Light Nights, a
14-block lighting exhibit.
Building owners
were challenged. When using color, quality is generally poor and
most times not worth the time or effort. However, Venture Lighting
was able to shine blue light on this American icon. The Wrigley
Buildings standard nighttime lighting consists of 116 metal
halide 1000 watt lamps on the south side, 16 more lamps on the west
side and another 62 to illuminate the roof parapets and clock tower.
After pre-testing
with Ventures Designer Color® blue, green and aqua 1000
and 400 watt metal halide lamps, the blue lamps created the most
vibrant impact to the buildings historic facade. "I chose
the Venture lamps because they could be quickly installed in the
luminaires mounted there now," said Tom Kaczkowski, director
of the HOK Lighting Group in St. Louis, and the building was spared
from being dark for even one night.
The Designer
Color lamps provided a "Wow" effect and drew significant
attention during this special event. The lamps use a unique blend
of halides in the arc tube to display vivid color and uniformity.
